射覆在甌、盂等器具下覆蓋某一物件，讓人猜測裡面是什麼東西。

射覆也就是將某個物品，多數是小物品覆蓋起來後，讓預測高手通過占筮的取得卦象，通過對卦象的特點、以及變化分析，確定出被測物品的特徵：幾個物品、物品形狀、顏色、尺寸、特性、到底什麼。

見香菱射不著，眾人擊鼓又催，便悄悄的拉香菱教他說「葯」字。……下則寶釵和探春對了點子。探春便覆了一個「人」字。

寶釵笑道：「這個『人』字泛的很。」探春笑道：「添一字，兩覆一射也不泛了。」說著，便又說了一個「窗」字。寶釵一想，因見席上有雞，便射著他是用「雞窗」「雞人」二典了，因射了一個「塒」字。探春知他射著，用了「雞棲於塒」的典，二人一笑，各飲一口門杯。
